Gen. John F. Reynold’s Sword

Gen. John F. Reynold’s Sword

The story behind this sword is interesting. It belonged to, but was never actually possessed, by General John F. Reynolds. As was explained to me, Reynolds was placed in command of a brigade where corruption ran rampant. Reynolds’ job was to weed out the corrupt officers in the brigade. When Reynolds arrived to his new command the officers of the brigade presented him with this beautiful sword and scabbard. Seeing that accepting the sword would create a clear conflict of interest Reynolds never accepted the gift. He died in battle before he had completed his work and never took possession of the sword.
